1. The World Tipiṭaka in the Roman Script : An Academic Viewpoint
Originally, the Tipiṭaka was recorded in Pāḷi, a common language of Asia. I believe the publication of the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman script, based on the Burmese-script edition revised at the B.E. 2500 Great International Council in Myanmar (1957), is very significant academically. Scholars who have been doing research in the field of linguistic, religion, and history may be interested in this edition of the Tipiṭaka as it is a great piece of research as well as an invaluable treasure since it paves the way to a more extensive research in other fields besides the study of religion.

2. The Future of the World Tipiṭaka
I have seen the result of the World Tipiṭaka Project in the Roman Script and learned that besides the printed version there is also a World Tipiṭaka Database which can be conveniently and easily accessed through e-Tipiṭaka Quotation WebService (www.tipitakaquotation.net) to search for the Tipiṭaka Studies Reference. Moreover, the differences in the printing of the variant readings of the Tipiṭaka using the national scripts of various countries are also printed. Therefore, this World Tipiṭaka has a tremendous academic value, reflecting the high level of skill in computer technology capable of creating a useful database accessible by all.

I have learned that the technology used in this project comes from various countries, for example, Japan's high-speed digital printing technology has been used in the printing of the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman Script. Thus, the Project is and international collaboration as ambassador of friendship to create world peace. The fact that Thailand has been given the responsibility of organising the project and presenting the World Tipiṭaka to the world community is therefore very significant indeed.

4. The World Tipiṭaka and Peace
The Project to publish and propagate the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in the Roman Script has a history that goes back 120 years ago in the reign of King Chulachomklao of Siam. The King had the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in the Siam-script edition, printed and presented to 30 countries worldwide. With such historical background, the present publication of the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman script is retracing the royal footsteps of King Chulachomklao of Siam. What surprises me that King's reign was the time of Western colonization of Asia. I am of the opinion that King Chulachomklao's to many countries in Europe, America, and Asia, including Japan, is not only significant in terms of religion, but also diplomatically significant.

King Chulachomklao of Siam might have wished to proclaim to the World that Siam, a country in Asia, possessing a high level of printing technology, a civilized country capable of printing sacred books. After he had presented the Tipiṭaka in the Siam-script Edition, King Chulachomklao went on a tour of Europe.

I believe that the publication of the Roman-Script Tipiṭaka does not merely aim at propagating Buddhism or Buddhasāsana but also to make known the capability of the Thai people to the world community and proclaim that the Thais want to have peace in the world.

พระไตรปิฎกเดิมบันทึกเป็นภาษาบาฬี (ปาฬิ) ซึ่งภาษาบาฬีนี้เป็นสมบัติส่วนรวมของเอเชีย ผมคิดว่าพระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมัน ซึ่งจัดพิมพ์ขึ้นโดยใช้ต้นฉบับซึ่งสังคายนาระดับนานาชาติที่ประเทศเมียนมาร์ เมื่อปี 2500 มีนัยสำคัญในเชิงวิชาการเป็นอย่างยิ่ง นักวิชาการที่ทำงานวิจัยค้นคว้า โดยทางด้านภาษาศาสตร์ ศาสนา และประวัติศาสตร์คงจะให้ความสนใจในพระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมันนี้ในฐานะผลงานวิจัยที่ยิ่งใหญ่ชิ้นหนึ่ง และเป็นสมบัติอันมีค่า เพราะจะเปิดทางให้มีการค้นคว้าวิจัยอย่างกว้างขวางยิ่งขึ้นต่อไป ไม่ใช่เฉพาะการศึกษาทางด้านศาสนาแต่เพียงอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น

2. อนาคตของพระไตรปิฎกสากล
ผมได้เห็นผลงานของโครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมันแล้ว ได้รู้ว่านอกจากที่ตีพิมพ์เป็นเล่มแล้ว ยังมีการจัดทำเป็นฐานข้อมูลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (World Tipiṭaka Database) สามารถนำไปอ้างอิงในระบบดิจิตอล (e-Tipiṭaka Quotation WebService → www.tipitakastudies.net) ได้อย่างสะดวกและง่ายดาย ว่าแต่ละข้อความมาจากส่วนใดคัมภีร์ (Tipiṭaka Reference Number) นอกจากนั้นยังระบุความแตกต่างของการพิมพ์ระหว่างพระไตรปิฎกฉบับอักษรต่างๆ ของแต่ละชาติด้วย (Variant Readings) จึงมีคุณค่าทางวิชาการเป็นอย่างมากและแสดงให้เห็นถึงระดับความสามารถอันสูงยิ่งในการนำเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์มาบูรณาการ เป็นฐานข้อมูลที่มีประโยชน์ ซึ่งใครๆ ก็สามารถนำไปใช้ได้

เกี่ยวกับเทคโนโลยีที่นำมาใช้ในโครงการนี้ ได้ทราบว่ามีการใช้เทคโนโลยีของชาติต่างๆ เช่นในส่วนการพิมพ์ โครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมันได้ใช้เทคโนโลยีดิจิตอลการพิมพ์ความเร็วสูงของญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งเท่ากับว่าเป็นความร่วมมือของชาติต่างๆ ซึ่งมาทำงานร่วมกันเพื่อสร้างสันติภาพของโลก เปรียบเสมือนทูตสันธวไมตรี และการที่ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่จัดทำขึ้นและนำเสนอสู่สังคมโลกเช่นนี้ นับว่ามีความหมายมาก

โครงการจัดพิมพ์และเผยแผ่พระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมันครั้งนี้มีประวัติและที่มาย้อนหลังไปประมาณ 120 ปี ในสมัยนั้นพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยามขึ้น (King of Siam Tipiṭaka) และพระราชทานไปยัง 30 ประเทศ ซึ่งภูมิหลังทางประวัติศาสตร์เช่นนี้ ทำให้มีการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมันขี้น ในครั้งนี้เป็นการตามรอยพระยุคลบาทของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ที่ผมรู้สึกแปลกใจคือสมัย ร.5 เป็นสมัยที่ประเทศต่างๆ ในยุโรปเข้ามาล่าอาณานิคมในเอเชีย
การพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยามในอดีต
ผมคิดว่าการที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยามและพระราชทานไปยังประเทศต่าง ๆ มากมายทั้งในยุโรปและเอเชียรวมทั้งญี่ปุ่น อาจไม่ได้มีนัยสำคัญในเชิงศาสนาเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่หากมีนัยสำคัญในเชิงกุศโลบายทางการทูตด้วย พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว อาจทรงมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะทรงประกาศแก่ทั่วโลกว่า ประเทศสยามซึ่งเป็นประเทศในเอเชียมีเทคโนโลยีทางการพิมพ์ระดับสูง เป็นประเทศที่มีความสามารถในการพิมพ์หนังสือและมีอารยธรรม และหลังจากที่พระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยามแล้ว ก็ได้เสด็จประภาสยุโรป

ผมคิดว่าการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลอักษรโรมันในครั้งนี้ก็คงจะไม่ได้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนาเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่เพื่อแสดงให้สังคมโลกได้รับรู้ความสามารถของชาวไทย และประกาศว่าชาวไทยอยากให้โลกมีสันติภาพ
