On the Birth Centenary of Her Royal Highness
The International Tipiṭaka Hall, Chulalongkorn University May I evoke the Supreme Buddha's blessings upon Her Royal Highness, Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, the most serene virtuous Lady who presides over the Special Dhamma Lecture -- "the Tipiṭaka and Vipassanā Meditation", on the occasion of the Birth Centenary of H.R.H. Somdech Phra Srinagarindra Boromarajajonani by Mr. S. N. Goenka, Chairman of the Vipassanā Research Institute, India, upon the invitation of Major Suradhaj Bunnag, Chancellor of the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the Supreme Patronage of Thailand. This is the occasion to honor the late H.R.H. the Princess Mother who truly studied and practiced the teaching of the Supreme Buddha. Her serene smile, radiant eyes and liveliness, reflecting the absence of sadness, are conspicuous to almost everyone. It is as if she had never been bothered by sufferings. It makes the people appreciative of her attainment of Dhamma. H.R.H. is the witness and advocate of the results of the correct practice of the Supreme Buddha's teaching which guides our steps away from sufferings of all degrees. We hope that today's Dhamma Lecture of Mr. Goenka enhance the advancement of proper Dhamma practice. On behalf of the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the patronage of the Supreme Patronage of Thailand, I wholeheartedly appreciate Mr. Goenka, for his noble task to uphold the Buddhasasanā by his wisdom throughout the past years.
For H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana, the benefactor of the Dhamma Lecturer par excellence, I extend to her my best wishes for her happiness and well-being.

Your Royal Highness, Excellencies, the President, Ladies and Gentlemen, On the special occasion, commemorating the Birth Centenary of H.R.H. Somdech Phra Srinagarindra Boromarajajonani, the Princess Mother, we are at this moment gathered in the International Tipiṭaka Hall, Chulalongkorn University, in front of the world's first printed set of the King of Siam Tipiṭaka, published over one hundred years ago, by Your Royal Highness's Grand-Father, King Chulalongkorn the Great, and given as the gift of Dhamma to 500 institutions throughout the world. Her Royal Highness, the beloved Princess Mother, who, according to the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, was "the most serene virtuous Lady who truly studied and practiced the teaching of the Supreme Buddha." For this auspicious occasion, we are pleased to have with us Mr. S. N. Goenka, the Meditation Master. He has published the world's most complete and latest Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Devanāgari script. He will deliver a lecture on "The Tipiṭaka and Vipassanā Meditation."
Now, may I, in the name of Chulalongkorn University and the Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund, present to you Mr. S. N. Goenka.
The Tipiṭaka and Vipassanā Meditation

Your Royal Highness, Your Excellencies the Ambassadors, the Speaker of the Senate, the Ministers, the Rector of Chulalongkorn University, the Chairman of the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund, Professors and Diplomats, my dear Dhamma Brothers and Sisters, Citizens of the Sacred land of the Emerald Buddha. It is a great pleasure for me to participate in the birth centenary celebration of Her Royal Highness, Somdech Phra Srinagarindra Boromarajajonani, the late Princess Mother. I heard so many good things about Her Royal Highness as a very distinguished follower of the noble teachings of the Enlightened One both in Pariyatti and Patipatti. I always feel very grateful to the noble Dhammika rulers of past and present of the 5 Dhamma lands; Thailand, Myanmar, Srilanka, Cambodia and Laos who very graciously and respectfully supported and protected the Sangha who in turn preserved and protected the Dhamma, both Pariyatti and Patipatti in its pristine purity for centuries together. If it was not preserved by the Sangha, a person like me would have never received it in its pristine purity.
On this auspicious occasion may I take the opportunity to express my feelings of appreciation of Buddha Dhamma in its Patipatti form which I found extremely relevant to the Pariyatti which I studied after practising Patipatti...

George A. Sioris The Former Greek Ambassador to India, Thailand and Japan and Founding Member of the M.L. Maniratana Dhamma Society Fund under the Patronage of His Holiness Somdech Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand
Your Royal Highness, It is certainly difficult to break the spell of the magnificent talk that we were deeply privileged to listen to. But, even as an "anti-climax", a few general concluding thoughts may be in order at this point and I fell sincerely honoured to be called upon to act as an interpreter of such a distinguished audience. I am confident that firstly, a deep feeling of inner tranquillity permeates us all after the wise and inspiring words by Buddhist meditation Master like Mr. Goenka. We are truly grateful to him for his precious insights and the wisdom he brought us from Lord Buddha's birthplace. There is an additional feeling of spiritual contentment as we gather here on the occasion of the elaborate Dhamma Society Publication of Dr. Anatole Peltier's original work on the Five Precepts. We all marvel at such a treasure of the popular Buddhist literature of Thailand. I believe that the task in front of some of us, entrusted with the honor to translate this story in foreign languages in view of its dissemination beyond the Buddhist sphere and throughout the world, is precisely to convey its deep meaning and wisdom, modestly hidden under a simple style; a style reflecting the unique atmosphere of recitation during quiet vigils, in various temples of the land, for the benefit of rural lay believers. It is indeed a multiple happy coincidence that we are all gathered in such a prestigious building and this International Hall of such a leading Thai University, at a function so graciously presided by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of our most beloved "Princes mother of Thailand". May her serene smile, conspicuous even to the remotest village of Thailand, guide the steps of each one of us individually towards "Santi". May the noble task of Chulalongkorn University and the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund come to fruition for the benefit of humankind, in times where inner peace and serenity become such a tragic rarity...
